Reflection: First week of Lent

Sr. Barbara McMullen

The Gospel this First Sunday of Lent tells us about Jesus being led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

The wilderness is something I doubt many of us experience.   For us, I think going into the wilderness means getting rid of the noise and distractions that can come between us and God.  We have to rid our lives of clutter and focus on living simply enough that we can really hear God’s voice.

Lent provides time for us to open ourselves to the graces of God, to focus on what gets in the way of that openness, and to believe that Jesus meets us in our weakness.  Do we believe that Jesus is there with us in everything we are going through, no matter what it is, and that He will gently guide us out of it?

Jesus conquered the temptations of the desert and Jesus will help us conquer our own and lead us to new life.
